Guide To Feeding Your Cat A Raw Food Diet

This is a continuation of my other post, “Guidelines To Feeding Your Dog A Raw Food Diet”. I figure many people also own cats and would like a raw diet option for their feline companions as well.

Dry kibble diets make your cat or dog perpetually dehydrated. This is particularly damaging to cats as they may not get enough water through a kibble diet. Cats are true carnivores, they need meat to be happy and healthy.

I personally try to stick to proteins that cats could actually catch themselves like any kind of poultry or rabbit. I’m sure other meats like beef are fine, but I’m quite certain that a house cat can’t take down a cow to eat it.

If you’re going to go through the trouble of making your own pets’ food. You may as well choose meat that is free from antibiotics and pesticides so you’re not swapping one crappy food for another.

Many raw cat food recipes out there include a lot of supplementation. I find this unnecessary, and instead try to find food sources for those vitamins.

Tips:

Feed: 2-3% of body weight

Average cat will eat 4-5 oz per day

Sardines provides Omega 3’s

Whole Eggs provides fat soluble vit. A, D, E, K

Canned pumpkin can provide fiber and help with the transition to raw

Kelp provides iodine and sodium

Dark meat and hearts provide much needed taurine

Chicken necks are good for cleaning teeth

Spinach a couple times a week provides a little extra Vit E.

Recommended Meal Percentages (veggies optional for added fiber)

83% meat (poultry/rabbit)

7% bone

5% liver

5% other secreting organ

OPTIONAL: 5% lightly steamed ground veggies (carrots, zucchini, kale, parsley, leafy greens)
