Oatmeal Treats For Goats (Booster Options)

Goats love treats and these are no exception. They all but climb over the top of me for these dandies.

Boosters

Moringa Leaf Powder: Moringa is touted as the new super-food among dieters for it’s high nutrient content. It grows in warm places like India and Africa and originally was considered animal feed, or goat fodder, before it’s benefits were discovered. It’s known for increasing milk production which makes it perfect for milking goats. With it’s high nutrient content it’s got several health benefits.

Moringa is said to have 90+ nutrients and 40+ antioxidants with 2 times the protein of yogurt, 4 times the vit A of carrots, 3 times the potassium of bananas, 4 times the calcium in milk, 3 times more iron than spinach, and 7 times the vit C of oranges.

Dose: A serving for a grown adult (human) is about 1 tsp. I’d say this is okay for regular sized goats, and then a 1/2 tsp for miniature goats.

Moringa Warning: With people it’s warmed against taking Moringa when you’re pregnant due to the lack of research and a possibility of causing miscarriages’. So be aware of that when it comes to your pregnant does. Also make sure when your buying it that it’s “Moringa Leaf Powder” and not the seed or root powder at those can be considered toxic. And lastly you want powder that nice and green, not dull and brown.

Pumpkin Seeds: These act as a natural dewormer. It paralyzes the parasites so they can’t cling to the digestive track.

BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seeds): These provide great trace minerals and healthy fats for a shiny healthy coat.

Serving

A treat is just that, a treat, so you don’t want to over do it. Especially if you have pregnant does where the sugars in the molasses could potentially affect the growing offspring. Severing size may vary depending on what nutrient boosters you’ve added. I generally give my mini goats 6-10 treats, but that’s only about once per week. If you’re giving these daily I’d say about 2-4 treats for miniature goats, and 4-6 treats for regular goat breeds should be appropriate.

Instructions
  1. In a high speed blender, grind at least 1-1.5 cups of your rolled oats. This will allow you to pack your treats together more tightly so they don't fall apart.
  2. In a bowl, mix your oats and molasses together. Follow this with any boosters you want to put in. Add more molasses as needed until everything sticks together well.
  3. Use a teaspoon to scoop out your little treats and place them on a cookie sheet or whatever you have.
  4. Allow to dry in a warm place. This can take hours or days to dry all the way. If they are not completely dry you'll want to store them in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks. Otherwise you'll want to use them up within about a week.
  5. You can oven dry them at 175-200°F and it'll be much quicker. BUT, if you added any boosters like the moringa powder then they nutrients could be damaged by the heat. Hope you goats enjoy them!
